BCS and ROCK-ON by CJ Prutch

The first BCS standings came out this past Sunday with Ohio State at #1, South Florida #2, and Boston College #3. Probably the most unheard of top three any of us have ever seen. I don’t think these standings will hold though, just like we have seen the last three weeks of major upsets. Starting at the top, Ohio State still has to play at Penn St, who just crushed Wisconsin this past weekend, and at Michigan, who has won 5 straight since there two upset losses to start the season. In between those two games they face off against Wisconsin and Illinois at home who are both 5-2 on the season. I really don’t think the Buckeyes will win all four of those games, especially the Michigan game. As for South Florida, they are a legitimate top 5 team. They beat Auburn at Auburn, and West Virginia at home when the Mountaineers were ranked #5 in the nation. South Florida still has to play at Rutgers this week, and at home against Cincinnati and Louisville. Although Rutgers and Louisville have been a disappointed thus far, I think they both have the best chance of upsetting South Florida. I’m calling it for this weekend, Rutgers beats South Florida. Now Boston College really hasn’t played anybody worth noting besides Georgia Tech this season. The real test is this weekend when they face #11 Virginia Tech at Blacksburg. This game is going to be a good one but I think the Hokies will outlast the Eagles. I strongly feel that LSU and Oklahoma are the two best teams in the nation even with a loss. No team will go undefeated this season so LSU should be in the title game. The Tigers do have a tough schedule the rest of the season compared to Oklahoma but they have had on all year anyway. What is also amazing about the BCS standings is how far down USC is at #14. That’s where they deserve to be right now because of their huge upset loss to Stanford and the same with #2 Cal who just lost to Oregon State. Look out for #8 Arizona State, who lead the Pac-10 and have a 7-0 record. This team is the sleeper in the Pac-10. USC and Cal will be back at the top by the end of the season and USC could make a case for the national title if they can beat Cal and Oregon on the road, and Arizona State on the road. It’s the Pac-10 though and anyone in that league can beat any team.

Well the Colorado Rockies did it tonight; they are going to the 2007 World Series. Unbelievable! This team just won 21 of their last 22 games, arguably the most impressive winning span in sports history. Not only that, they are the first team ever in the wild card type playoff system to sweep the division series and championship series in the playoffs. Matt Holliday for MVP, I know your not supposed to include the playoffs, but the guy is amazing, he did it in the regular season and he has done it in the post season. The Los Angeles Dodgers were saying the Rockies are the best team in the National League back in the middle of September when this ridiculous streak started and it’s true. Colorado has just got to be going crazy right now, but can this continue in the World Series? It has to, even though they have to out the streak on hold for probably another week because of the Red Sox and Indians series, the Rockies are a well balanced team that is very capable of winning the World Series.
